Slain doctor was engaged — Colleague

The 27-year-old medical doctor, Irawo Adamolekun, who was killed in traffic in the Anthony area of Lagos, on January 11, was engaged to a  medical doctor, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt.

A colleague of the deceased, Chioma Nwokocha, who spoke with our correspondent on Friday, said Adamolekun, a Christian, was engaged to a Muslim doctor.

Nwokocha said the deceased, his fiancée and herself were among the foreign-trained doctors who wrote the qualifying examinations of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to practise medicine in the country at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State, in 2010.

Nwokocha said, “I met Adamolekun at the OAUTH in 2010. But we lost contact after passing the qualifying exams and the subsequent induction by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

“But surprisingly, he got a job at the Osuntuyi Medical Centre, Obanikoro, where I work. He resumed work on January 7 and I was so happy to be reunited with him.

“We talked about sundry things and he told me about his fiancee. I was really surprised when he told me who his fiancée was because the lady is a Muslim and he was a Christian.

“But Adamolekun told me he loved her so much and that they would cope. He said he had gone to meet with her parents and that he had trashed out the knotty issues with them. He never discriminated on grounds of religion or ethnicity. He was such a cheerful and wonderful person.”

Nwokocha who spoke with our correspondent amid tears said she had yet to come to terms with the demise of her friend.

Another colleague of the deceased, Rotimi Olajobi, said the deceased was preoccupied with the pursuit of a higher degree in sports medicine.

Olajobi who worked with the deceased for five days at the hospital said, “We were on duty twice and he handed over to me three times. Every time we had the opportunity to talk, he never raised the issues of relationship, family life or fashion.

“He was always talking about doing a master’s degree in sports medicine every time we spoke. He was very passionate about that dream as he guarded it jealously.

“The last time we discussed, he said he had applied for an admission in a university abroad and was working on getting money for the tuition.”
